The position requires somebody with the ability to motivate supporters even in situations when they feel dampened. A pioneer ought to be in a situation to think of methods of tending to issues inside an association in a way that will be persuading to all the partners. Technique creating and usage are the absolute most significant jobs of a pioneer as found in the meeting with the CEO of Dunkin’ Donuts. In this exploration, the center is to decide the significance of authority in creating and executing of systems. Significance of Leadership in Crafting and Executing Strategy According to Hough (47), numerous associations that are fruitful to a great extent owe their accomplishment to compelling initiative. Dunkin Donuts is one of the main brands not just in New England region of the United States, yet in addition in the whole world. The organization experienced monstrous achievement following the climb of Nigel Travis to the situation of CEO of the firm in 2008. He helped the firm to grow, and as of now, Dunkin’ Donuts is one of the biggest cafés on the planet. He had the option to think of procedures that were intended to expand on the qualities of the firm, and breaking point its shortcomings as showed in the meeting. This is a genuine impression of what a pioneer is anticipated from with re gards to making and executing methodologies. Job of an innovator in creating a procedure The meeting with the CEO of Dunkin’ Donuts gives a knowledge on the job of a pioneer in making a methodology. It is imperative to comprehend the job of a pioneer in creating methodologies inside a hierarchical setting. Hough (37) says that representatives inside an association are continually standing by to adhere to guidelines given to them by their pioneer. It is the job of the pioneer to create systems which will shape the premise of directions to be given to the representatives. Creating a system begins by understanding the ecological powers that may impact the typical activity of a firm.Advertising Looking for report on business financial matters? The interior natural elements are the qualities and shortcomings of a firm that have immediate or roundabout effect on its tasks. A pioneer must have the data about the interior condition of the firm the person in question is driving. This data will originate from different offices, for example, money, advertising, creation, acquisition, and coordinations units. A decent pioneer ought to consistently guarantee that the individual in question accumulates data from every important division routinely so as to distinguish the organization’s qualities and shortcomings. At the point when the required data about the inward condition is gathered, the pioneer should have the data about the outer condition. In this regard, the pioneer should comprehend the chances and dangers in the market. The outside condition presents a progression of chances that a firm will require when creating methodologies. Openings introduced by the rising innovations, development of the white collar class, developing financial condition, and the world of polit ics ought to be tapped suitably so as to boost the productivity of the firm. Then again, the market has a few dangers that the administration must arrangement with so as to guarantee that its typical activities are not influenced as appeared in the meeting. The market rivalry, uncertainty, financial downturn, and the changing tastes and inclinations are a portion of the dangers that the pioneer ought to know about while dealing with an association. While data about the inside natural elements can be gathered by accepting standard reports from the important departmental heads, outside variables must be gotten through research. This implies the association should direct normal research about outer ecological powers. It is simply subsequent to gathering all the important information that a pioneer can start the way toward making a methodology. The procedure will be founded on the data accumulated about the inner and outside business condition. As Hough (69) notes, system detailing is a procedure that includes cooperation. It's anything but a procedure where the pioneer sees the data gave to him and makes an individualistic strategy.Advertising We will compose a custom report test on Interview with the Chief Executive of Dunkin’ Donuts explicitly for you for just $16.05 $11/page Learn More All the offices should initially be permitted to talk about issues that influence their units, and make their recommendations on how these issues can be tended to. The departmental heads will at that point meet the CEO with their proposals. The job of the pioneer is to tune in to these proposals, and with the assistance of other departmental heads, create procedures which are in accordance with the recommendations introduced before the board. The pioneer should know about the limitations that may make a few recommendations be adjusted to mirror the money related limit of the firm, and time accessible for the usage. A pioneer should consistently stay adaptable while making strategies. The person must stay practical to changes which are occurring inside the inward and outer condition so as to think of compelling methodologies. Job of an innovator in executing a system From the meeting, plainly a pioneer assumes a crucial job in technique execution. As indicated by Thompson, Strickland and Gamble (75), approach usage is one of the most significant assignments in an association. The approach created in the above stage is only a bit of guidelines of what ought to be finished. An association can possibly make progress in the event that it can execute its procedures in a prevalent way. As a pioneer, one would need to play an administrative job in guaranteeing that the procedure is executed as adequately as could reasonably be expected. In any case, the pioneer may not be available in all the divisions at all the occasions. There are regulatory assignments that the pioneer is required to attempt, and hence, it is important to designate a portion of the obli gations to other junior pioneers who will have the option to oversee the execution of the procedures. As the interviewee noticed, the departmental heads will be legitimately mindful to the CEO. The methodologies detailed will be given over to the departmental heads who will be straightforwardly associated with their execution. The methodologies should be separated into explicit undertakings that ought to be embraced by explicit people. It is the obligation of the departmental heads, with the assistance of their chiefs, to separate the methodologies into errands. The CEO should survey the advancement made by every office in executing the procedures. The pioneer ought to support close coordination between the divisions of the association during the execution procedure so as to guarantee that there is harmony. It is additionally the duty of the pioneer to set the parameters that will be utilized to gauge achievement in the execution of procedures by every one of the departments.Adverti sing Searching for report on business financial matters? They should comprehend what the pioneer is anticipating from them, and the course of events that each assignment ought to be cultivated. The pioneer ought to guarantee that the person conducts normal audit of the presentation of the considerable number of offices so as to affirm the reports given by leaders of the offices. Along these lines, all the departmental heads will know that they have a duty to all the partners. End From the meeting, plainly a pioneer has a significant job in creating and executing methodologies inside an association. In spite of the fact that the pioneer isn't legitimately associated with the assortment of information and execution of the made systems, the person is consistently the main thrust that guarantees that everything is done effectively. A pioneer is relied upon to start the way toward gathering data about the interior and outer condition. The person will at that point lead a group that wi ll think of procedures that look to adjust the inward condition to the powers in the outer condition. During the time spent executing the methodologies, the person in question is required to offer good and material help to the group engaged with the usage procedure. Hough, John. Comparing the Movies A Time to Kill, by John Grisham and To Kill a Mock

The film dependent on John Grisham's A Time to Kill is a Hollywoodized, cutting edge variant of To Kill a Mockingbird. The two films utilize a considerable lot of similar subjects and plot components; yet the previous film is one-dimensional and unsurprising while the last is imaginative and deliberate. The film form of Harper Lee's tale To Kill a Mockingbird is viewed as a great film, though John Grisham?s adjusted novel is simply another case of the lucrative endeavors of Hollywood. A portion of the motion pictures' increasingly noticeable topics are the equivalent. Both spotlight on the family, especially the job of the dad. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Attacus, who depends on the dad of creator Harper Lee, is an upstanding guardian. In addition to the fact that he is a superb good example for his kids, however he sets aside effort to converse with his youngsters. He regards them as developing people, permitting them to call him Attacus, and clarifies significant issues instead of limiting them. Jake loves his little girl like never before when he looks at her theoretically to his client?s misled girl Tonya. The intensity of the family establishment is repeated when Carl delivers retribution upon the guilty parties who assaulted Tonya. These ties drive an in any case socially adjusting man into disregarding the holiness of human life without blinking without lament. Another inspiration that motivates his activity is the individual debasement he more likely than not experienced as a dark man in a bigot network that incorporates boondocks degenerates, who look downward on the blacks in the network. Despise wrongdoings show up in the two films, including loathe filled mobs, endeavored lynchings, and the return of the Ku Klux Klan. Different signs of prejudice were acknowledged also, for example, bad form in the court framework and the educational system, where, in the two motion pictures, the heroes? youngsters are consistently provoked for being the offspring of a ?nigger darling.? The great figure of the legend is at the cutting edge of the plot in every film. The two legal advisors put their lives at risk for the freedom of a customer without anticipating remuneration. Attacus does so in light of the fact that he has faith in equity and knows it?s the proper activity, while Jake just sympathizes with his customer, particularly by anticipating his little girl into Tonya?s experience. In any case, these men penance themselves for other people, a characterizing normal for legends. Attacus particularly is... ...e interesting. Most current motion pictures neglect to investigate issues that are disputable or basically provocative. Bigotry was an intense issue in the South when To Kill a Mockingbird was composed. Numerous individuals attempted to overlook or disregard this issue as opposed to confront it, however the book strikingly stands up to it and incites the watcher to do likewise. Since A Time to Kill came out after society all in all quit enduring bigotry generally, this issue is very nearly a clichã ©, positively no longer educational. The nearest this film goes to a fascinating idea is when Carl tells Jake in jail that they can't be companions in light of the fact that Jake takes a gander at him and sees a dark man, as opposed to only a man. This is a fascinating part of prejudice which affirms that insofar as whites see blacks as the other, they can never interface on a similar level. Lamentably, this thought is left totally lacking. Jake brings it up toward the end, yet just to reveal to Carl th at he was thoroughly off-base about him. A Time to Kill has a couple of extraordinary and contacting scenes, yet at long last it is just another lucrative inexpensive diversion film, though To Kill a Mockingbird is an undying exemplary.

Want to Increase Your Productivity at Work Just Walk Away

We at Hult Labs, given our own experiences, are willing to guess that your workday begins, and ends, with two things you may not give much thought to—a desk and a chair. We are also willing to guess that you sometimes get trapped, in that desk and chair, as you focus on being a productivity machine. That’s probably not an earth-shattering revelation, but we’re making a point about how common it is for us to spend—unquestioningly—countless hours almost frozen in time, sitting at a desk and staring at a screen. Why state the obvious? We’ve come across compelling research about the fact that sitting at a desk for long stretches of time can actually be quite bad for us, even aversely affecting our ability to be truly productive. Thankfully, there’s some newly emerging thinking on the best ways to partition our workday so that we can maximize our productivity during our time at the office. Most of us have been conditioned to believe that sitting at a desk, sometimes for hours on end, translates to a greater level of productivity. â€Å"Did I work hard today? I was at my desk for 10 hours!† Sure, it sounds impressive (in a way), but does that mean that more work—or better work—was done? Thorin Klosowksi solves this burning question in his article â€Å"The Office Worker’s Schedule for Healthy Living,† in which he asserts that we can be both productive and healthy if we are willing to follow a schedule that reminds us throughout the day to step away from our desks for a breather. He writes: â€Å"Creating a schedule to remind yourself to stand up and exercise a little might seem insane, but its pretty clear we all need some type of motivation because were not doing it on our own.† Thing is, we’re so trained to think that walking away from our desks means that valuable work time is also taking a walk on the non-productivity side. Not true! We’ll get to why that is, but first: how can we break this conditioning, this strongly ingrained habit to be tethered to our desks? First, we have to be our own advocates, our own â€Å"walk away† coaches. As it turns out, â€Å"we sit for about 15 hours a day,† a stunning factoid that Klosowski mentions in his article. His research uncovered the following: â€Å"When youre sitting, the big muscles, especially in the lower part of body, are completely unloaded. Theyre not doing their job, That inactivity prompts changes in the bodys metabolism†¦and produces a number of biological signals, what scientists call biomarkers, which are linked to cancer.† Imagine day after day of sitting, almost immobile, tackling one to-do list item after another—even eating at your desk in an attempt to counter an ever-growing list of tasks or emails. It’s probably not too hard to envision this because it’s probably your reality. And that’s a problem. Long stretches of sitting may not directly translate to certain cancers for you, but the odds are getting stacked—and not in your favor. And it’s not just a lower body/sitting issue. Klosowski takes a look at other modern-day office hazards, like eye and wrist strain, which can be annoying at best, or require surgery at worst. It makes a desk job sound almost†¦dangerous! But it’s not just our bodies that suffer; our minds can take a beating as well. In her article, â€Å"To Stay on Schedule, Take a Break,† Phyllis Korkki quotes Rotman School of Management professor, John P. Trougakos: â€Å"Mental concentration is similar to a muscle†¦It becomes fatigued after sustained use and needs a rest period before it can recover.† Trougakso recommends in the article that we take a break before reaching the end of our mental rope. Korkki writes: â€Å"Symptoms of needing time to recharge include drifting and daydreaming.†Ã‚   But we wonder: Is there an exception to taking a break every hour? Wouldn’t it be better to keep working if you’re in â€Å"the zone† and id eas are flowing from your mind like water from a faucet? The answer to that may surprise you. Enter Klosowski’s schedule (devised in collaboration with Brian Parr from the Department of Exercise and Sports Science at the University of South Carolina Aiken), which is designed to make you take leave of your computer every half hour. That’s right—you’ll have to step away from that poetically comprehensive spreadsheet that’s in the making, that perfectly worded email to your clients that’s not quite done yet, or the phone that never stops demanding your attention. This may sound like defying gravity, but it really isn’t. And there’s good incentive to do it. Klosowski quotes Parr as saying, â€Å"I think a good goal is 5-10 minutes of activity (away from the desk) per hour. That could be 5 minutes every half hour or 10 minute each hour†¦some workplaces are more supportive of taking short activity breaks than others. Many of these ideas can be done â€Å"secretly.† The benefit of taking breaks for the amount of time that Parr suggests is that you are giving some stasis to—if not preventing altogether—the negative impact that sitting at your computer can have on your body and mind. The research shows that short breaks, again, away from the desk, actually make us more productive than if we’d stayed at the desk all along. We may seemingly â€Å"lose† work time every time we get up to take a break, but we gain it back in spades through our increased productivity throughout the day. We recommend that you read the article in its entirety to figure out how best to incorporate Klosowski and Parr’s recommended schedule for a productive workday, but we will leave you with this: a routine that involves 10 minutes of some form of activity—away from your desk (yes, we’re stressing a point)—every hour may include a walk around the block for a few minutes and then some stretching, or grabbing a coffee and checking in with a colleague. There are myriad ways to re-charge your body and mind in under 10 minutes. In fact, Klosowski states, †By the end of the day, it is reasonable that someone could stretch and strengthen all of the major muscle groups. For many people, that is a lot of exercise!† And if you’ve abandoned your exercise routine because of your long work hours, you’ll be gaining some beneficial physical activity while increasing your productivity. The Quest for Individual Freedom in Liberalism

Liberalism is one of the principal doctrines in Western political philosophy. Its core values are typically expressed in terms of individual freedom and equality. How these two ought to be understood is a matter of dispute so that they are often differently declined in different places or among different groups. Even so, it is typical to associate liberalism with democracy, capitalism, freedom of religion, and human rights. Liberalism is has been mostly defended in England and the United States. Among the authors that most contributed to the development of liberalism, John Locke (1632-1704) and John Stuart Mill (1808-1873). Early Liberalism Political and civic behavior describable as liberal can be found across the history of humanity, but liberalism as a full-fledged doctrine can be traced back to approximately three hundred and fifty years ago, in northern Europe, England, and Holland in particular. It should be remarked, however, that the history of liberalism is entrenched with the one of an earlier cultural movement, namely humanism, which flourished in central Europe, especially in Florence, in the 1300 and 1400s, reaching its apex during Renaissance, in fifteen hundreds. It is indeed in those countries that most delved into the exercise of free trade and exchange of people and ideas that liberalism thrived. The Revolution of 1688 marks, from this perspective, an important date for liberal doctrine, underlined by the success of entrepreneurs such as Lord Shaftesbury and authors such as John Locke, who returned to England after 1688 and resolved to finally publish his masterpiece, An Essay Concerning Human Understanding (1690), wherein he provided also a defense of individual liberties that are key to the liberalist doctrine. Modern Liberalism Despite its recent origins, liberalism has an articulated history testifying of its key role in modern Western society. The two great revolutions, in America (1776) and France (1789) refined some of the key ideas behind liberalism: democracy, equal rights, human rights, the separation between State and religion and freedom of religion, the focus on the individual well-being. The 19th century was a period of intense refinement of the values of liberalism, which had to face the novel economic and social conditions posed by incipient industrial revolution. Not only authors such as John Stuart Mill gave a fundamental contribution to liberalism, bringing to the philosophical attention topics such as freedom of speech, the liberties of women and of slaves; but also the birth of the socialist and communist doctrines, among others under the influence of Karl Marx and the French utopists, forced liberalists to refine their views and bond into more cohesive political groups. In the 20th century, liberalism was restated to adjust to the changing economic situation by authors such as Ludwig von Mises and John Maynard Keynes. The politics and lifestyle diffused by the Unites States throughout the world, then, gave a key impulse to the success of liberal lifestyle, at least in practice if not in principle. In more recent decades, liberalism has been used also to address the pressing issues of the crisis of capitalism and the globalized society. As the 21st century enters into its central phase, liberalism is still a driving doctrine that inspires political leaders and individual citizens. It is the duty of all those who live in a civil society to confront with such a doctrine. Sources: Bourdieu, Pierre.  The Essence of Neoliberalism.  http://mondediplo.com/1998/12/08bourdieu. Happiness Is A State Of Contentment - 805 Words

What is happiness? Happiness is a state of contentment. For instance, when I was a child at the age of 5 years old, I would find happiness by eating dirt, playing hide and seek, and being with my older siblings. The connotation could be defined in many actions; it depends on who the question is towards. If somebody just sees the negative aspects of life he does not notice the wonderful ones. Happiness comes in a whole variety of ways. Whenever a kindergartner is asked what makes him happy, he would say hugging family,† â€Å"eating candy,† â€Å"playing with toys,â€Å" and â€Å"friends.† If a kindergartener says giving hugs or receiving hugs, for instance; the hug of his parents how his father scent of cologne he puts before he goes to work. The scent of his mother s perfume which he helped choosing with his dad. How their hearts beat next to his ear as they hug him. This type of comfort is near love which he feels with the people closest to his heart hugs him he then gets the joy of glee. Happiness is found everywhere and one must simply search in the right places to find it. For instance, someone who just learned how to tie his shoes could demonstrate happiness by getting his shoe and declaring how he learned. While he ties his shoes and hears the encouragement of his parents saying â€Å"you can do it† it then leads him to touch his shoes and sees it accomplished. These are some common examples of experiences of this emotion known as happiness. Trends in Income and Price Elasticity of Transport †Free Samples

Questions: 1. Define and explain the three key economic ideas: 2. Using the economics or other literature to identify estimates of the income elasticity of demand for at least three different products. Answers: Define and explain the three key economic ideas: People are rational: Rationality plays an important role in the field of economics. It is a common to assume that people are rational in behaviour. They choose a bundle of goods, from the given alternatives, which gives them highest level of satisfaction. The resources are taken to be constant and the decision is made according to the priorities and preferences(Mathis Steffen, 2012). Consumer, producers and society try to maximise their level of satisfaction, profits and welfare respectively. They all work at margin. A consumer tries to consume a commodity till the point his satisfaction from additional unit turns to zero, given his level of income and prevailing prices(Krstic Krstic, 2015). Producer produces till the point where his gains from additional unit turn to zero. For example, if George produces belts, he will produce till the point where his profits (revenue- cost) turn to zero with given resources and technology. There is no incentive for him to produce further as the c osts will be higher than the revenue. People respond to incentives: Incentive motivates consumers, producers and society to increase their consumption, production and welfare respectively. A rational person compares his costs to his gains. Positive incentives increase the gains of each while the negative ones forbid further consumption or production(Cardinaels Jia, 2010). Fall in prices is a positive incentive for consumers to increase their consumption while the same phenomenon is negative for the producers and vice versa. They then decrease their production until the increase in demand (because of lower price) pushes the prices back to the initial value. Decline in prices both increases the demand and decrease the production. Producers decrease the output because their profits are reduced(MatthewMcCaffrey, 2014). For example, if the price of apples falls, Serena increases her consumption of apples with her given level of income. The reduced prices acts as in incentive and persuades Serena to increase her satisfaction with increased consumption. Optimal decisions are made at the margin: A rational person makes a decision based on a given number of alternatives. He trade-offs the ones associated with lesser satisfaction for the better ones, as per his preferences. These decisions are made with respect to the existing circumstances. It is about increase or decrease in the current consumption or production. Decisions are never about all or none. Optimum decisions are made in terms of satisfaction or profits derived from the subsequent unit. Decision will be favourable when the satisfaction or gains from the subsequent unit exceeds the cost or it and vice versa. At the optimum level, marginal cost is equal to marginal revenue. After this point, gains are less than the costs and the production or consumption is reduced(Lunenburg, 2010). For example, Dan, a bread baker, uses marginal analysis to compare the costs and gains associated with the additional production of breads. He employs his funds and other resources to increase the production when there is high demand. The gains will be more than the cost associated with the production increase. Using the economics or other literature to identify estimates of the income elasticity of demand for at least three different products. Income Elasticity of Demand estimates: Income elasticity of demand refers to the responsiveness of demanded quantity of a good for a given change in the income of the consumer(Fouquet, 2010). It is used to estimate the future production gains associated with the rise in the income level of the consumers. It can be calculated as follows: Income elasticity of demand () The income elasticity of demand has a range from zero to infinity. As the value of elasticity gets closer to infinity, the more elastic is the good. If the magnitude is closer to zero, then the good is inelastic to the income. Income elasticity range is as follows: Value Elasticity 0 Perfectly Inelastic 0 1 Relatively Inelastic 1 Unit Elastic 1 Relatively Elastic Perfectly Elastic Income elasticity of demand bifurcates goods into normal and inferior. Normal goods have a positive relationship between income level and demand while inferior goods demand increases with the decrease in income level and vice versa(Khan, 2012). Normal goods: Income Elasticity is positive Necessity goods: Income Elasticity is positive but low Luxury goods: Income Elasticity is positive and high Comfort goods: Income Elasticity is unitary (=1) Inferior goods: Income Elasticity is negative High income elasticity of demand implies that a small change in the income of the consumer, changes the demand significantly. That is the demand is very sensitive to the change in income(Fouquet, 2010). The negative sign is an indicator of negative relation between the income of the consumer and demand of the good. This implies it is an inferior good. Positive sign implies normal goods, which can be necessities, luxuries or comforts(King Weimer, 2012). Examples for income elasticity are: Suppose Daniels income increases by 15%, his demand of bread increases by 3%. Income elasticity of bread in this case will be as follows: Bread is a necessity for Daniel. Even though his income has increased, the demand for bread is not affected much. He may increase his consumption to some extent but it is not significantly high. He will consume bread even if his income decreases. The value of elasticity is positive but low. Thus, it implies that the income elasticity of necessities is relatively inelastic. Assume that the consumers income increases by 20% and the demand of gold increases by 80%. The income elasticity here will be: As can be seen, income elasticity in case of luxury goods like gold, income elasticity is high and positive. This shows that the luxury goods are relatively income elastic. Alteration in the income of the consumer results into high demand for the luxuries. If the income of the consumer rises by 20%, the demand for public transport like busses falls by 40%. Income elasticity of public busses is as follows: The negative sign only signifies that it is an inferior good. Here, the income elasticity is negative and relatively elastic. When the income of the consumer rises, the demand for inferior good gets reduced. Since, the quality of the goods is low; people opt for better options with the increased income. They switch to cabs in the given case. References Cardinaels, E., Jia, Y. (2010). The Impact of Economic Incentives and Peer Influences. A Seperate Peace- Finny&Gene essays

A Seperate Peace- Finny&Gene essays The line between friendship and hatred can sometimes be very unclear. Where exactly does one cross over this line? Could it possibly be when one discovers envy within himself for his friend, or is it when he begins to wish he is somewhere other then where he is? In the novel A Separate Peace by John Knowles, the friendship line between Finny and Gene is extremely unclear. What would cause ones best friend to jounce a tree limb in hopes the other would be harmed? To understand the relationship of Finny and Gene you must analyze their backgrounds. The narrator of the novel, Gene Forrester, is a grown man who returns to the Devon School and recollects his years spent there. During the duration of the novel Gene is around 16 years old, he is thoughtful, intelligent, with a tendency to brood. Gene is extremely competitive with a sarcastic sense of humor. He often shuns overt displays of emotion, much like most students at Devon. Genes best friend is Finny(Phineas). Finny is perfect in almost every way. He is honest, handsome, self confident, utterly disarming, extremely likable, as well as the best athlete in the entire school. Finny lives for moments of pure, unrestrained friendship, and his strong sense of loyalty extends to any group of which he is a member. He strives to be rebellious, making even the sternness proponents indulge in anarchical bliss with him. Now understanding the identity of Gene and Finny you can begin to analyze their friendship. The two characters both have their own strong and week qualities. Gene is smart and an average athlete, while Finny is an excellent athlete but a below average student. In a situation such as this, one may begin to get jealous of the others gifts. In the novel Gene realizes that Finny is extremely envious of his gifts and tries many different ways to ruin Gene. For example Finny drags Gene to the coast, keeping him up all night, ca ...

Uncontrollable randomness in life - Research Paper Example ‘The Birds’ a movie is set in Great Britain where humans are unexpectedly attacked by birds. The government of Great Britain fails to protect its citizens from the attacking birds. This movie depicts a situation where nature has turned against the human race and causes massive deaths (Bishop 135). Humans are unable to control nature which is represented here by the birds. Christopher D. Morris argued that the birds in Hitchcock’s film are more of a contribution to the gothic drama industry they an interpretation of natural phenomenon (Bishop 136). The presence of the birds can be understood as a method Hitchcock uses to bring out his favorite theme: destructive force of the patriarchy (Bishop 145). In the movie, Mitch tries to nail boards across the door but the birds still manage to break these defenses (Bishop 138). Patriarchy in the movie posed a greater threat to Melanie than the birds (Bishop 139) Some things happen in life that are random and beyond the human control. Birds attacking people in the Hitchcock’s movie is an example of such events. However, some critics argue that birds in Hitchcock’s movie should be interpreted as a method to bring out the theme. This paper concludes that Hitchcock used birds to depict uncontrolled situations in life as well as build on gothic

Very old man with enormous wings - Essay Example Everyday life details of the story are elements of realism. The events of the story are set in some coastal village sometime. Unusual guest or visitor with the wings in Pelayo’s yard attracts many people who are willing to come and see the real angel. However, no one is quite sure that the old man is really an angel. The neighboring woman â€Å"who knew everything about life and death† claimed that the man was angel. Slowly people leave Pelayo’s yard, be cause they lose the interest in a strange old men. Rather, their attention is switched to another interesting creature which is Spider Woman. By that time, Pelayo and his wife Elisenda manage to get some money from the onlookers and get rich. However, after public interest is gone, the couple is not interested in the fallen angel either. Even though Marquez’s second title of this short story is A Tale for Children, issues that are raised by the author is this short story are not childish. The fist theme of the story is writer’s measurement of two opposite human feelings such as cruelty and compassion. Marquez sinfully present the degree of human cruelty towards those who are week and dependent. The negative attitude to the old man is exacerbated by his unusual look and strange language which is known to no one. Heartlessness of people from this story is striking: â€Å"the most merciful threw stones at him trying to get him to rise so they could see him standing†; or â€Å"they burned his side with an iron for branding steers, for he had been motionless for so many hours that they thought he was dead† (Marquez). Elisenda and Pelayo’s first plan was to set the old man on a raft with provisions and let him sail freely. Such an act is not the most merciful one, because leaving the old almost dieing man alone is rather pitiless. However, when the couple understands that they can profit from showcasing the fallen angel to the audience they chance their plan. When their child gets well, Elisenda and Pelay

US faces worst recession in 26 years Essay Example for Free

US faces worst recession in 26 years Essay The United States is once again experiencing a recession similar to what happened in 1982. The Treasury and Federal Reserve Offices are caught in surprise as they did not expect the economy to take such a fast and dramatic collapse as it has been doing for the past months. As a result, there has been a slowing down of retail sales as consumer confidence collapses. People are not spending as much as before. They are not using their credit cards and making loans as often. Home prices are going down. Foreign demand is also weakening. Alan Blinder, a professor at Princeton and former Fed vice-chairman, is certain that the country will face a recession worse than in 2001 or 1990 but the concern now, according to him, is making sure that this recession is less deep and less long than the 1982 recession. The government has put into action the $100 billion rescue plan to stabilize the banking system and hopes that it will improve things in the next few weeks. Columbia professor and former Fed governor, Frederic Mishkin, believes that in spite the bailout, the damage has been done already so that the future still looks uncertain. In the meantime, the possibility of rising unemployment rates threatens to deepen the housing slump, depress mortgage rates and increase non-payments of consumer loans. Nevertheless, Fed officials continue to look for ways and options to improve the economic outlook of the future. I agree with the writer’s views that the economic recession exists and that it is bound to get worse even as Fed officials are doing as much as they can to at least soften the blow of the crisis. No one can deny it as we feel it everyday through stories of friends or their parents who got laid-off, who have to move because they cannot pay their house mortgages anymore or those who could not pay their credit card interests anymore. However, the economic recession that the country is experiencing today can be looked upon as just another financial problem for the United States. In the history of modern America, the country has undergone one economic crisis after another, but is still able to rise above each one. For years before every economic downturn, the country has grown and improved. One cannot always be moving up. One has to fall sometimes. The crisis today is a good wake-up call to Americans who have become too comfortable with being citizens of a rich country so that they simply buy things on credit, confident that they would always find the means to pay for them because salaries would keep increasing and their standard of living would only keep improving. A recession makes the people conscious of their spending habits and maybe this is why after a while, the economy grows again. When all of America learns to be more conservative about their spending and become more conscious of how they manage their money, the economy would improve. Reference Guha, Krishna. Comparing Wiesels Night and The Gospel According to Mark :: Comparison Compare Contrast Essays

Comparing Wiesel's Night and The Gospel According to Mark Wiesel's Novella, Night, can be labeled a 'religious book' when looked at in light of the unquestionably religious text, the "Gospel According to Mark" from the "New Testament" of Christianity's Holy Bible. This proves to be the case if one looks at the central parallels which may be drawn between the two works. A comparable narrative framework, consistent use of light and dark images (indicating 'good' and 'evil,' respectively), and the ongoing theme of questioning faith serve as these central similarities. However, the works do part company when the reader seeks to answer those questions of faith which the characters of both works raise. The narrative frameworks of the two texts are quite similar. Both are biographies (Night in first person, the "Gospel" in third person) of a strong and admirable individual's life (or aspect of his life) told in the form of a story. Both of these individuals, Wiesel and Jesus, experience an inversion of occupation within their lives. Wiesel, a "student" at home, says that he is a "farmer" when he is brought to the concentration camp in order to seem to the SS officer who is questioning him that he will be a good worker (Wiesel 29). Likewise, Jesus, who by birthright was a carpenter, chooses to lead his life as a teacher and healer. The oddity of this inversion is pointed out by the people of Jesus' "hometown", they ask "is not this [Jesus] the carpenter?" (Mark 6.3). Their question implies the absurdity of his teaching the word of God and healing when he is 'supposed' to be a carpenter. In addition, in both texts, the narrator's perspective is limited. Mark's limitation is revealed b y the other three gospels, that serve as a part of the canon of the "New Testament," in that his testimony is not entirely consistent with theirs. This is shown most explicitly in the difference between his gospel and John's gospel; "Mark's Jesus will neither confirm nor deny that he is the long-awaited king... [but] repeatedly throughout John's gospel, Jesus declares himself to be the means of salvation" (Oxtoby 211). Mark does not narrate the definitive version (or perspective) of Jesus' life. Wiesel's limitation is admitted by himself. He is a prisoner, and so he does not know what is going on in the greater world, or even who is winning the war.

Applications of Machiavelli Essay

There are many ideas people can learn from history’s great thinkers and achievers. The Renaissance Era had the fastest progress in history. During this era, many thinkers and achievers such as Niccolo Machiavelli, Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo introduced new ideas and new forms of art. Niccolo Machiavelli was an Italian politician and diplomat. The reason his theories are advanced is that he is already used critical thinking while he lived in a country where most people explained things using God and religion. He was also a philosopher, and his many theories about managing a kingdom were quite innovative in Renaissance times. The Prince is a manual about how to manage a kingdom successfully. The Prince was written for Lorenzo de Medici of the Medici Family, which was the best known family in the Renaissance Era. Medici Family made great contributions to the culture because it traded and paid for many works of art in that period. The Medici Family was rich and powerful in Italy, and it was the Renaissance equivalent of a major corporation. Machiavelli lived hundreds of years before the major corporation of today, but The Prince can still be used as a guide to getting ahead in business, just as it is a guide for building a successful princedom. The Medici Family had existed for hundreds of years, and it was powerful and rich just like the Coca-Cola Company. The Coca-Cola Company may also last for hundreds of years since it has been successful for over a hundred years. The Prince tells readers how to use power correctly; it also tells readers how to sustain the kingdom’s power and prevent the kingdom’s  decay. More specifically, Machiavelli tells readers that what kind of personality and morality a successful prince should have. The Prince contains some of Machiavelli’s ideas which were very advanced for that period. These ideas are still useful now and can also equally be applied to the Coca-Cola Company. The Coca-Cola Company is the leader in the beverage industry, and it is a very successful global company. Managing the Coca-Cola Company is similar to managing a kingdom. Therefore, Some of Machiavelli’s theories could be used by the Coca-Cola Company. In the chapter â€Å"How princes should honor their word† and â€Å"The constitutional principality†, I found some appropriate ideas which may be helpful to The Coca-Cola Company. Thesis statement: Although Niccolo Machiavelli died hundreds of years ago, some of his ideas such as showing only the good qualities, keeping a good relationship with people, and making the product indispensable to people are helpful to the Coca-Cola Company. Honor the word: In The Prince, Machiavelli makes some recommendations to the king about how princes should to honor their word. The recommendations can also apply to the advertising of the Coca-Cola Company. Machiavelli said, â€Å"A prince, therefore, need not necessarily have all the good qualities I mentioned above, but he should certainly appear to have them.†(57) No one is perfect, including the prince. Machiavelli believes that a prince should show his good qualities, and hide his bad qualities. It is like the advertisements of the Coca-Cola Company. A good advertisement should show all the advantages of the products or services advertised, and hide the disadvantages. Furthermore, we use our genuineness to earn other people’s trust. However, Machiavelli has a unique perspective on how to earn the trust of people. In chapter eighteen of The Prince, â€Å"†¦princes who have achieved great things have been those who have given their word lightly, who have known how to trick men with their cunning, and who, in the end, have overcome those abiding by honest principles.† (56) If princes want to earn the trust of people, they need to use some type of scheme instead of being honest. This idea can also be used in advertising. A good advertisement is impressive, and it shows only the advantages to the customers instead of showing  everything about the product to the customers. According to Interbrand, Coca-Cola is the most valued brand in the world. Coca-Cola has good sales performance because it attaches great importance to its products’ advertisements. It placed advertisements in magazines, on TV, in websites, and on street signs. In China, the Coca-Cola Company hired a number of well-known Chinese movie stars and athletes to make commercials for Coke. Coke is a great drink for summer because it is thirst quenching and cool. One of the short commercials was very impressive. A group of teenagers was running on the street, and they were sweating hard. Everyone was tired and thirsty. At this time, a van with a Coca-Cola logo passed by. They recovered their energy by drinking Coke. The whole advertisement focused on the teenagers’ athletic bodies and their expressions of enjoyment. This advertisement showed the advantages of Coke, which are the wonderful taste and the cool refreshment; however, it did not show the disadvantages of Coke including high amounts of sugar, caffeine, and chemical additives. After watching the commercial, people have the desire to buy Coke. As Machiavelli advised, The Coca Cola Company is using cunning to trick customers into drinking their soft drinks by showing only the positive aspects of Coca Cola. Relationship with people: Machiavelli has written about the relationship between the prince and the people. â€Å"I shall only conclude that it is necessary for a prince to have the friendship of the people; otherwise he has no remedy in times of adversity†(34) If a prince does not have a good relationship with the people, he will soon lose his power. A prince brings peace and prosperity to the people, and the people give their support to the prince. The â€Å"people† in The Prince are similar to customers in modern society. If a company wants to hold a great market share in the industry, it must focus on its relationship with customers. The Coca-Cola Company has a positive image for customers. The product is shown as â€Å"energetic and youthful†. When people visit the Coca-Cola Company’s official website, they can feel the company’s enthusiasm. The Coca-Cola Company has a short film on its home page which shows polar bears. This film is about the happy life of polar bears. The bears in the film are really cute and kind, and they are enjoying Coca Cola. It definitely leaves a good impression on the customers. Also, the Coca-Cola  Company has successful marketing strategies. The Coca-Cola Company has a great amount of loyal customers because it serves more than 200 countries in the world; customers can buy their products everywhere because they have the most advanced distribution channel. As a result, Coca-Cola is the most valued brand in the world; it has held about a 48% market share of the beverage industry. The Coca-Cola Company is the leader in the industry because it has a good relationship with customers. Make products indispensable: According to The Prince, â€Å"Therefore a wise prince must devise ways by which his citizens are always and in all circumstances dependent on him and on his authority; and then they will always be faithful to him.†Ã¯ ¼Ë†35) That is to say, If a prince wants the people always be faithful to him, he should make people dependent on him. The Coca-Cola Company has a similar idea. When it was introduced, Coca-Cola contained cocaine, and this is the origin of the name â€Å"Coca Cola†. Cocaine is a stimulant from the leaves of the coca plant. People become addicted to cocaine by the long-term use of it. After cocaine was prohibited, The Coca-Cola Company put caffeine in Coke instead of cocaine. However, caffeine still can make people become addicted to Coke, thus, they become dependent upon having Coca Cola for the unique flavor and for the caffeine. One of the most important people in the Coca-Cola Company’s history is Robert W. Woodruff. He was the CEO of the Coca-Cola Company in 1923. Woodruff had the same idea as Machiavelli, which is making customers â€Å"dependent† on Coke. He mentioned that if the customers could not get Coke immediately when they were thirsty, Coca-Cola would lose in the competitive marketplace. The first vending machine was invented, and the Coca Cola Company began to sell coke in retail stores and convenience stores. Woodruff’s idea was to satisfy all the customers no matter when and where the customers wanted Coca Cola. The Coca-Cola Company made a very successful commercial in 1937, which was groundbreaking for that period because the theme was lifestyle. In this commercial, The Coca-Cola Company highlighted the importance of Coke in life instead of the attributes or ingredients of Coke. The most famous advertising slogan from this commercial is â€Å"The Pause That Refreshes†. Woodruff spent a lot of money and time on promoting Coke, but it was well worth the effort. The Coca-Cola  Company still spends lots of money on advertising even in nowadays. In 2012, the Coca-Cola Company spent more than three billion dollars on their advertising and increased the sales of firm and brand recognition. The Coca-Cola Company now has many loyal customers, and Coke plays an important role in our daily lives. Conclusion: Machiavelli wrote The Prince for the Medici family. The Medici family was like the big corporations of today. Because of this, Machiavelli’s ideas are just as important now as they were during the Renaissance era. As Machiavelli advised, princes should only show their good qualities and hide the bad qualities. Through its advertising, the Coca-Cola Company is using cunning to trick customers into drinking its soft drinks by showing only the positive aspects of Coke. Moreover, Machiavelli believes that if princes have a good relationship with people, people will always support them. In modern society, the Coca-Cola Company has many loyal customers because it has a good relationship with them. Furthermore, Machiavelli advised that people will always be faithful to a prince if people are dependent on him. The Coca-Cola Company is using caffeine in its products, so when people drink Coca Cola, they become addicted. Also, the Coca-Cola Company spent a lot of time and money promotin g its products. As a result, the Coca-Cola Company has a great number of loyal customers. All in all, many of the ideas in The Prince are similar to the ideas of the Coca-Cola Company, although The Prince was written during The Renaissance hundreds of years before Coca Cola was introduced. Deconstruction Paper - Daddy by Sylvia Plath - 839 Words

â€Å"Daddy† Deconstruction Paper The poem â€Å"Daddy† by Sylvia Plath paints a great picture of a daughter and her Nazi father, but this poem is more than just that. It symbolizes the relationship that they once had, and how it has affected her throughout her whole life. This poem also shows a very generalized depiction of how women see men who have treated them not so greatly. Although Sylvia’s father was German, he was not a Nazi, which is how she depicted him in her poem â€Å"Daddy,† She imagines her father as an ordinary man when she states: â€Å"You stand at the blackboard, daddy, in the picture I have of you. A cleft in you chin instead of your foot but no less a devil for that, no not any less the black man who bit my pretty red heart in two,†¦show more content†¦To prove the hate side of the relationship, she states â€Å"Daddy, I have had to kill you. You died before I had time,† in the first stanza, in the eleventh stanza, â€Å"No less a devil for that, no not any less the black man who bit my pretty red heart in two,† and in the last stanza, â€Å"Daddy, daddy, you bastard, I’m through.† To prove that she loved her father she states, â€Å"I used to pray to recover you† in the third stanza, and â€Å"At twenty I tried to die and get back, back, back to you† in the twelfth stanza. Many people say that they have a love-hate relationship with someone close to them, but I think it is rare if it ever reaches the severity of Sylvia’s relationship with her fath er. We see many different events of Sylvia’s relationship with her father in this poem, and although he died when she was eight, she seems to remember much of that time in her life. This could mean two things, either she is blowing her relationship with her father way out of proportion, or this relationship really was terrible. Either way, she is putting the issue on a pedestal, and letting it affect her much more than it should. Most suicidal people tend to think that the issue that they are dealing with is not worth living with. Life is precious, whether we believe it or not. No issue should affect us so greatly that we do not want to live life anymore. I am not trying to mock, but I honestly feel that people who are suicidal are just trying to get attention, but that’s a different
